Installing automatic irrigation

Pots need a lot of attention during the growing season and some form of automatic watering is a boon when time is limited. Potentially the most efficient in terms of water conservation, irrigation systems can also be adapted for borders.

1. You can buy irrigation systems from larger garden centres and most include all you need for a small patio; extension pieces are available as required. Each manufacturer's system may use slightly different connection techniques.

2. Check that the containers are in their final positions and measure the distance between the furthest pot and your tap. The cut the main tubing to this length, ready to connect the feeder tubes that will supply each pot.



3. Measure the length between the pots and the main tube. Cut the required number of feeder tubes and soak their ends in hot water to soften the plastic. This makes it easier ti fix them on to the connecting pieces and droppers.



4. Cut the main pipe at each container; soak the ends in hot water. Then push the two sections of main tubing and a feeder tube on to a connecting piece. Attach a drip nozzle to the end of the feeder tube. Repeat for each pot.

5. Connect the automatic timer to an outdoor tap with a screw thread, and then attach the main pipe. Temporarily override the timer, turn on the water, and check the system for any leaks or blockages.


 
6. Set the timer to come on as needed – for example, at night or first thing in the morning – for the required number of minutes. Monitor initially to check that you are not over – or under-watering the containers.


 
7. Some drip nozzles are designed to be inserted along the feeder tubes so that they can water more than one pot. Place each nozzle near the base of the plant to avoid water wastage and fix in place with the supplied pegs.
